Introduction
Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) is Ireland’s third technological university and home to 14,000 students and a staff complement of approximately 2,000, full-time and part-time, across six campuses in Athlone, Limerick, Thurles, Clonmel, and Ennis.
Established on October 1, 2021, TUS has a strong regional focus and will be a key driver of development and investment across the Midlands and Midwest. The new networked university, linked by the river Shannon, borders on almost half of Ireland’s 26 counties and will provide unprecedented levels of access to higher education.

The Role Assistant Librarian – Grade VI
Qualifications/Experience
Candidates must:
- have the requisite knowledge, skills and competencies to carry out the role. Competencies will be informed by best practice Public Appointment Service competency frameworks for the Irish Public Service;
- be capable and competent of fulfilling the role to a high standard;
- have obtained at least Grade D3 or H6/O6 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher, ordinary, applied or vocational programmes) or equivalent or have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the QQI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being of a comparable to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent or higher or have appropriate relevant experience which encompasses equivalent skills and expertise;
- Post graduate qualification in librarian and information science
Desirable: Minimum of two years post qualification relevant experience in a university of higher education environment.

Principal duties and responsibilities:
The successful candidate’s duties will include the following:
- To assist in the managing of the day-to-day operation of the library and its staff, under the guidance of the Head Librarian.
- To assist in implementing TU policy rules and regulations to facilitate the appropriate and efficient use of library resources.
- To assist in the development and implementation of new educational products.
- To assist in research, development and introduction of new resources and services.
- Collaboration with academic departments on online delivery and digital services provision.
- Collaboration with research offices and academic staff on scholarly communication support and the management of research outputs.
- To assist in the procurement, acquisition, financial control of new resources and assets.
- To assist in the supervision of staff involved in acquisitions, financial control and financial management of resources and assets.
- To assist in the supervision of staff involved in cataloguing, serials, interlibrary loans, desk duties, rostering and other functions within the library.
- To assist in all administration procedures of the libraries and the staff.
- To assist with maintaining and developing the Library’s online resources, library collections and other resources.
- To assist in identifying, disseminating, and marketing information concerning the availability of materials in subject fields relevant to the research and teaching of the TU.
- To assist in organizing/promoting and participation in both internal and external user education programmes.
- To assist in the preparation of library guides and online information literacy tutorials as appropriate.
- To assist in organising library materials in respect of cataloguing and classification.
- To assist and participate in the delivery of an information enquiry service to the TU community and regional interests.
- To assist in developing and monitoring services for students with special needs
- To assist in identifying and where appropriate, be responsible for staff training needs and staff development.
- To assist in the planning for future needs and developments.
- To assist in/participate in all committees/groups on which the appointee is a member or is assigned.
- To prepare and assist in the preparation of such reports as are required from time to time.
- To assist in carrying out user surveys.
- To assist in handling special cases at the Circulation Desk.
- A willingness to challenge conventional thinking, and an ability to bring to bear fresh perspectives and to re-think traditional library services.
- Availability to work scheduled evenings and Saturdays as required during Term.
- Provide supervision and support in Clonmel Library as required.

To undertake any other duties as defined by the Head Librarian or their nominee from time to time.
Superannuation
This is a pensionable post. Specific details of the scheme will be dependent on the successful appointee’s individual status and therefore such details will be provided at the time of appointment.
Applicants should note that they will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Declaration to confirm whether they have previously availed of an Irish Public Service Scheme of incentivised early retirement or enhanced redundancy payment.
Applicants will also be required to declare any entitlements to a Public Service pension benefit (in payment or preserved) from any other Irish Public Service employment.
Hours
A staff member appointed to this post will have to work a standard working week of 37 hours (net of rest breaks).
Annual Leave 27 days per annum. CL 0009/2014 will apply.
Salary Scale €51,528 – €62,951 (7 points).
The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.
