Assistant Librarian

Job Specification

The Marino Institute of Education (MIE) is an Associated College of Trinity College Dublin,
The University of Dublin. The Institute provides a range of education courses at
undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Its undergraduate four-year level 8 degree courses
include:

 The Bachelor in Education (Primary)
 The Bachelor in Science in Education Studies
 The Bachelor in Science in Early Childhood Education.

At postgraduate level the Professional Diploma in Education (Further Education) provides for
the academic and professional requirements of teachers working in further education and the
Professional Master in Education (Primary) is a level 9 two year full time primary initial
teacher education course.

Two postgraduate level 9 courses are offered on a part-time basis over two years:

 The Master in Education Studies (Intercultural Education)
 The Master in Education Studies (Early Childhood Education)

In addition in collaboration with colleagues at Mary Immaculate College, MIE offers students
the opportunity to pursue a Masters in Arts in Christian Leadership in Education which is a
two year part-time level 9 degree accredited by The University of Limerick.

The Library.

The Library supports the learning and teaching activities of the Marino Institute of Education
by providing a range of library and information services. MIE wishes to recruit an Assistant
Librarian to assist and support the delivery of these services. This appointment is a full time
fixed term three-year contract post. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wishes
to pursue a career in an academic library within a context of a small, committed and efficient

Candidates will be required to have:

 A strong academic background (preferably at Masters degree level) with a
qualification in Library and Information Studies recognised by the Library
Association of Ireland
 A thorough understanding of the role of an academic library and the external
information environment in which it operates
 Relevant experience using Library Management Systems in an academic library
environment
 Forward thinking approach to technology and willingness to explore the capacity of
new tools to deliver traditional library services and information skills
 Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills
 Cumas feidhmeannach sa Ghaeilge
 Strong IT skills
 An ability to work both independently and as part of a team
 A good understanding of the education system including the continuum of teacher
education, teaching and learning and continuous professional development
 A willingness to continuously build his/her professional knowledge and skills base
 A willingness to work flexible shift patterns including evenings and weekends.

Main Activities/Responsibilities

The Assistant Librarian will be responsible for

 General library maintenance and administrative work including circulation and return
of library materials shelving, data entry and responding to user queries.
 Developing, delivering and evaluating information literacy sessions and supporting
materials, including via e-learning opportunities.
 Creating strong working relationships with teaching staff and students, providing
information support including on a range of electronic resources and new
technologies.
 Promoting and marketing the profile of library services, both internally and
externally, using a range of technology and approaches, including social media,
conferences, college open days, and publications.
 Supporting accreditation and quality inspections
 Advising the Librarian and senior management of the institute in relation to emerging
needs and developments in library service provision
 Deputising for the Librarian where necessary
 Any other appropriate duties as specified by the Librarian.
