Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Librarian – Metadata Cataloguer – Digital
Resources & Imaging Services (DRIS) at the Trinity College Library Dublin. The successful
candidate will join the Digital Resources & Imaging Services team and be responsible for all
activities relating to the creation of metadata for the output of DRIS (original and complex copy)
and its input into all associated repositories (internal and external) with a primary focus on the
Trinity College Library Digital Collections Repository (http://digitalcollections.tcd.ie). You will be
responsible for the creation of metadata for the output of the Digital Resources & Imaging
Service. Metadata creation will occur for a variety of standards including but not limited to Dublin
Core and MODS, with the likely introduction of additional standards as defined by internal and
external collaborative projects and international best practices.

Candidates should have a postgraduate qualification in Librarianship or Information Studies and
expertise in international standards for bibliographic description and authority control. He/she
will have an excellent knowledge of such topics as metadata schema, metadata interoperability
and the emerging RDA standard. This person will be comfortable initiating independent research
to create original and complex copy metadata, and for the verification of copyright status when
necessary.

 

Standart Duties of the Post

To undertake the creation of high quality metadata (original and complex copy) as the
cataloguer for our rapidly expanding collections of digital library objects digitized and
ingested into the Digital Collections repository (http://digitalcollections.tcd.ie)

To facilitate the evaluation and adoption of any new metadata standard into the Digital
Resources and Imaging services departmental work flow, as directed by
developments within the library, external projects collaborations, with the DRIS
Department head, and Library steering comittee

Maintain ongoing quality control through formal audit and inspection processes to
ensure that the project metadata output meets The DRIS department and Library’s
Metadata Standards Policies.

Work cooperatively with relevant departments and individuals, both within the Library
and outside, to agree level of description and standards to be applied (authority
control, subject analysis, controlled vocabulary etc.)

In cooperation with the Head of Service establish quantitative and qualitative targets
and agree performance levels

Compile and maintain such statistical information as required by the Head of Digital
Resources & Imaging Services

Contribute to the ongoing development of the technical repository framework for
organizing, preserving and displaying the digital collection

Design and implement metadata research and cataloguing workflows and best
practices in collaboration with the DRIS department team (department head,
metadata cataloguer, digital photographers, technical developer)

Develop guidelines and documentation for using metadata schemes and conduct
training as required

Actively participate in relevant committees both within the Library and outside

Maintain current awareness of international developments in cataloguing, metadata
and information retrieval

Promote the work of the Digital Resources and Imaging Service through presentations
articles and other communications medium

Any other duties as directed by the Head of the Digital Resources & Imaging Service
