Job Title: Assistant Librarian
Reporting to: Archivist Records Manager/ Head of Library & Archives
Location: RDS

Applications are invited for the position of RDS Assistant Librarian.

The RDS Library & Archives have been part of the Society since its foundation in 1731. The Library Collections reflect the Society areas of interest: agriculture, science, enterprise, equestrianism and the arts. The RDS Library Collections contain over 100,000 items including monographs and journals of Irish and general interest; the Collection has a wealth of archival material documenting the history of the Society.

Key responsibilities

  • Care and management of the RDS Library printed collections
  • Cataloguing Library collections
  • Manage library desk services to RDS Members
  • Analysing and responding to queries from RDS Members, Staff and external researchers
  • Review, order, and receive new library stock when required
  • Maintaining and updating the library e-resources
  • Ensure financial compliance in RDS library through raising relevant purchase orders in a timely manner
  • Analysing and gathering statistical data
  • Organising and marketing exhibitions and events relative to the RDS Library & Archives
  • Promoting and marketing the Library via appropriate Social Media channels
  • Using CRM system effectively to organize and deliver specific library events
  • Any other tasks assigned by the Head of Library & Archives

Key Attributes

  • Knowledge of collection management and relevant cataloguing standards
  • Knowledge of the library management systems
  • Excellent customer service experience and skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to proactively manage working environment relationship
  • Strong organisation and prioritisation skills and the ability to handle a busy varied workload
  • Experience of using a variety of platforms and applications for the development and delivery of library services
  • Strong knowledge of marketing a Library via Social Media
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively, share expertise and work in small team
  • Flexible and adaptable with a willingness to take on additional duties as required
  • Positive approach to career development and to networking within the Library community

Experience and Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science, recognised by the Library Association of Ireland and/or CILIP
  • Minimum of three years working in a Special Library
  • Affiliation with the Library Association of Ireland and/or CILIP
