Campaign ID: 2410809
The Local Government sector in Ireland is made up of 31 Local Authorities and 3 Regional Assemblies. Local Authorities are the closest and most accessible form of Government to citizens. They have responsibility for delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making cities, towns and countryside attractive places to live, work and invest.
Reporting to the Director of Service, the County Librarian is charged with the responsibility for the planning and management of the library services for the Local Authority. This is a senior management role within the Local Authority which includes determining the organisational framework of the library in what is a very challenging environment.
An opportunity now exists in Kildare County Council for the position of County Librarian.

The Library Service meets the wide-ranging information, education, research and cultural needs of the people of its respective geographical area of operations. They formulate overall objectives, policies and plans for the development and operation of the service. This is a senior role which includes determining the organisational framework of the library in what is a very challenging environment. They will be responsible for ensuring the ongoing smooth operation of the service and the co-ordination of both staff and activities in the Library service.
Kildare County Council has a network of 15 branch libraries throughout the county. This network is supplemented by a Mobile Library Service, a Local Studies, Genealogy Service and County Archive. Kildare is a dynamic county that has seen tremendous growth in population. Approximately two thirds of the population reside in the larger towns of Leixlip, Naas, Newbridge, Kildare, Celbridge, Maynooth and Athy. A large full-time library is contained within each of these towns and these libraries act as a network to support 8 part time libraries and a mobile library service. Our vision is to embed the library within the county as an unsurpassable community space; an environment that acts as the gateway to creativity, inspiration and support responding to the needs of its communities.
