Overview
The Law Society of Ireland is inviting applications for the role of Deputy Librarian. The Law Society Library supports the legal research requirements of solicitor members, trainee solicitors and students registered on a range of courses including LL.M., Diploma and Certificate courses in a variety of legal topics.
The Deputy Librarian will support the Head of Library and Information Services and contribute to the managing of the library service, including the provision of high-quality legal information resources, services, supports and facilities to the entire Law Society Library community. The successful candidate will have strong technical skills and be responsible for the library’s technical and digital infrastructure. The role reports to the Head of Library and Information Services.
This role is a permanent contract, and the candidate will be required to work some evenings and weekends.
Main Duties & Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will carry out the following duties in line with the Society’s standards and strategic objectives and as directed by the Head of Library and Information Services.
- Deputise for the Head of Library and Information Services in her absence.
- Manage all library software systems including the library catalogue (SirsiDynix Enterprise and Portfolio), the library’s mobile app, and an in-house enquiry tracking system. They will also be responsible for the planning of upgrades and web development. Experience of working with SirsiDynix is desirable.
- Assist the Head of Library and Information Services with planning and implementing the budget for the library; develop an understanding of the structure of the budget.
- Assist with the development and implementation of the library’s communication strategy and attend communication group meetings.
- Provide support with the editing and scheduling of the library’s weekly newsletter LawWatch.
- Organise the staff rota for the enquiry desk and supervise the enquiry/information work. The successful candidate will develop a strong understanding of the profession’s information needs.
- Train staff to required standards; take part in recruitment/interview procedures for new staff.
- Project Management –the successful candidate will assist the Head of Library and Information Services in planning and executing projects.
- Responsibility for the acquisition of Irish book materials.
- Responsible for the library’s statistics and analytics.
- Collection development planning. The Deputy Librarian will play a key role in the planning strategy for developing the collection. They will also meet with publishers’ reps and database suppliers and be involved in forward planning for space requirements.
- Assist the Head of Library and Information Services with the running of the Society’s institutional archive.
- Any other requirement as directed by the Head of the Library or the Director of Representation and Member Services.
Knowledge & Skills
- A recognised postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies.
- Substantial experience in conducting legal research and a broad understanding of legal issues.
- Experience of managing a library team.
- Excellent IT skills with understanding of library management systems.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- A keen interest in continuing professional development.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Innovative and imaginative approach to continuous improvement of operations and service delivery.
- Strong understanding of excellent customer service.
- Some flexibility with availability including weekend work.
