The Law Society of Ireland is inviting applications for the role of Head of Library and Information Services to join their Law Society Library Team. The Law Society Library supports the legal research requirements of solicitor members, trainee solicitors and students registered on a range of courses including LL.M., Diploma and Certificate courses in a variety of legal topics.

The Head of Library and Information Services will be responsible for the strategic management of library services with the objective of providing high quality legal information resources, services, supports and facilities to the entire Law Society Library community. The role reports to the Director of Representation and Member Services.

This role is a two year fixed term contract.

Main Duties & Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will carry out the following duties in line with the Society’s standards and strategic objectives and as directed by the Director of Representation and Member Services.

  • Responsible for the recruitment, induction and management of library staff including staff training and development.

  • Plan and implement policy in the areas of technical and digital services.

  • Review and update collection development policy to reflect availability of resources in various formats and to cater for evolving user needs.

  • Plan and implement the annual budget and other financial reviews as required.

  • Plan and promote library user education and promote library community engagement.

  • Procurement: negotiate with external suppliers to ensure the Library is licensed to supply the best quality information services for the most competitive prices.

  • Manage the Society’s Institutional Archives, an interest in legal history and experience of working with archival material is an advantage.

  • Maintain and foster professional links with other librarians working in the legal environment.

Knowledge & Skills

  • A recognised postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies.

  • Substantial experience in conducting legal research and a broad understanding of legal issues.

  • Experience managing a law library preferred.

  • Experience of managing a team.

  • Excellent IT skills with understanding of library management systems.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • Innovative and imaginative approach to continuous improvement of operations and service delivery.

  • Strong understanding of excellent customer service.

  • Some flexibility with availability including weekend work.

  • Forward looking for new ways to introduce information services for members.
