SALARY SCALE: €35,406 – €52,087 p.a.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To provide and manage library services in the University Hospital Library (UHL) based in the University Hospital, Dooradoyle, Limerick. This small library provides services to hospital employees and UL students on placement and is currently staffed by a librarian and a library assistant.
UL provides library services in the University Hospital as per a service level agreement between the Health Services Executive (HSE), the UL Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS) and UL Library. A Library Management Group, with representatives from the HSE, the University Hospital, GEMS and the University Library advise on strategy.
The position will be filled temporarily via UniJobs while longer term recruitment takes place.
DESCRIPTION:
The following provides a broad description of the role. The list of job functions is not exclusive or all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
Primary responsibilities include:
Liaison and management
• Manage day-to-day library services and supervise library staff
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with hospital employees, researchers, students and other users as appropriate
• Work closely with relevant staff from the HSE and UL Library regarding the management, budgets, staffing, collections and services of the UHL
• Meet with relevant staff regarding UHL resources, and support for GEMS modules & HSE programmes
• Support accreditation inspections
• Prepare submissions in support of HSE and UL initiatives Provide information as required in planning for the new Clinical Education & Research Centre, including library space.
• Provide regular statistical reports and develop performance indicators for the library
Reference and information services
• Ensure front line services are maintained
• Together with library assistant, provide desk services as necessary
• Provide reference services in response to clinical queries and provide literature search reports as required
• Provide a consultancy service for clinicians and researchers
• Provide training and support to library staff in the use of information resources as required
• Administer Athens access
Information skills
• Provide training and support to library users in the use of information resources as required
• Provide teaching, training and learning support to large and small groups by means of lectures, tutorials and demonstrations
• Deliver learning materials and guides in web or and print formats
• Participate in the planning and development of information skills programmes, both generic and subject specific
Collection development
• Advise on the collection development requirements of the library and manage agreed budgets
• Prepare submissions for funding e.g. from the Medical Education Libraries Group (MELG) for the UptoDate resource.
• Order resources, including books, journals and databases.
• Work with UL and HSE in collaborative purchasing agreements
• Analyse usage of resources and exploration of alternatives.
• Collaborate with UL Library’s Technical & Digital Services on processing book orders
CPD & Marketing
• Contribute to the development of the library and its services through participation in internal and external specialist groups, teams and committees e.g. Health Sciences Library Group (HSLG) Working Group
• Promote and market the library and its resources and services to the client user groups
• Produce a regular UHL Newsletter Participate in continuing professional development.
Other
• Any other appropriate duties assigned by the Head of the Department.
Essential Criteria:
A degree and accredited qualification in Librarianship and Information Studies
Experience of working in an academic, medical or special library
Excellent IT skills
Demonstrable presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex information to non-experts
Excellent liaison, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to use tact, diplomacy and subtle strategies to influence others
Ability to proactively promote and market library services
Is customer-focused and is consistently accessible and responsive
Excellent relationship-building skills, is consistently helpful, positive and collaborative with partners and stakeholders
Can plan effectively, sets clear objectives and priorities for own area of responsibility, in line with department objectives, and can produce deliverables and meet deadlines
Can proactively seek opportunities to advance own area/team objectives
Works cooperatively and effectively in a team environment
Is flexible, demonstrates openness and receptivity to new ideas and approaches
Desirable Criteria:
Relevant experience related to the role
Experience working as a professional librarian
Postgraduate degree by research
Other relevant qualifications and evidence of continued professional development
