UCD Library consists of 5 libraries and provides library and information services to UCD staff and students. Library Assistant’s play a key role in service delivery, providing administrative and operational support, ensuring that UCD Library offers excellent services and facilities to all users. A professional, enthusiastic, user focussed and flexible attitude is crucial as the successful candidate will be working in a library undergoing continuous change. The role will evolve in the context of Library developments and a library assistant’s role from this panel may include support for the work of the Collections Services Unit; Client Services Unit; Special Collections Unit; Research Services Unit or Planning and Administration Unit. Training will be provided to support your ongoing development in the Library.

Successful applicants will be placed on a panel to fill current vacancies and any future temporary or permanent Library Assistant posts arising in the 12 months following interview.
2013 (2010) Salary Scale: €24,583 – €35,691 p.a.
2013 (2011) Salary Scale: €22,125 – €32,122 p.a.*
* Subject to all new entrants to public sector as of 01 January 2011
Appointment will be made on the minimum of the scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities may include:
§ Provision of access and lending services – supporting the operation of Library policies in this area
§ Provision of information services via desks, Chat, online and phone and support for full range of information skills activities
§ Preparation and processing of orders including receipt of new materials
§ Assistance with catalogue record creation
§ Provision of customer service support to internal and external Library customers when required
§ Provision of general administrative duties in support of Unit operations- including item checking, filing and office processes
§ Appropriate support as required for bibliometric, mapping and geographic information services (e.g. geo-referencing), and the Research Repositor (http://researchrepository.ucd.ie)
§ Administrative assistance for the Digital Library (http://digital.ucd.ie) and associated repository services, including help with digitising documents, copyright research and dealing with user queries
§ Any other duties as appropriate to the role

Selection Criteria
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

· Evidence of ability to up-skill rapidly particularly in IT-related activities

Desirable
· A third level qualification or equivalent experience of at least one year as a Library Assistant in an academic environment
· Familiarity with Library Management Systems, Millennium preferred
· Appreciation of historical collections and a sympathetic approach to antiquarian material.
· Familiarity with Adobe products including Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design
· Familiarity with use of Social Media for service promotion
