Library Internship – Chief State Solicitor’s Office
Commencing: June 2015
Duration: 12 weeks
Salary: €530.16 (gross) per week (€27,664 per annum pro rata)
The Chief State Solicitor’s Office Library invites applications for a 12-week internship commencing in June 2015. This internship is open to applicants who are recent library/information management graduates, students pursuing a library/ information management qualification on a part-time or distance basis, or those who have been accepted onto a library/information management course commencing in the coming academic year. This position will provide valuable experience of working in an in-house library environment in the legal information sector.
The Library delivers legal information services to CSSO staff, currently numbering over 230 people, of whom 168 are legal staff. The Library’s print collection consists mainly of legal textbooks and a judgements archive.
Access to journals, case law, legislation and legal research material is delivered primarily through online legal information platforms including Justis, Westlaw, Practical Law and LexisLibrary, which are accessible to staff through the Office’s intranet. The Library uses the SirsiDynix Symphony library management system for cataloguing and circulation, and Moys Classification and Thesaurus for Legal Materials for classification.
Tasks & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be assisting the Librarian in the day-to-day provision of library and information services to CSSO staff, including:
§ Searching the Library’s online legal information sources
§ Compiling cases and legislation for Court
§ Managing the circulation of library stock
§ Assisting staff in using library services and resources
§ Assisting with an ongoing collection management project to weed superseded material from the collection and remove it from the catalogue
The successful candidate will, by 8 June 2015:
Have completed a recognised professional qualification in library/information management
OR
Have been accepted onto an academic programme in library/information management commencing in the next academic year
OR
Be pursuing a professional qualification in library/information management at undergraduate or postgraduate level on a part-time or distance basis
AND
will have
§ Excellent general IT skills and search skills
§ Good communication skills and a commitment to quality customer service
§ An organised approach to managing information
§ The ability to work on own initiative
§ An interest in legal information management

The function of the Chief State Solicitor is to act as Solicitor to Ireland, the Attorney General, Government Departments and Offices. CSSO legal staff are involved in many aspects of legal work including a wide range of civil litigation in all courts (including the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg) as well as in the provision of conveyancing, property law and general advisory services for an array of public service clients.
