Purpose of the role:
The Library provides timely access to world-class information resources to support direct patient care; evidence-based practice; research, learning and teaching; and management decision-making.  The Library is a multidisciplinary health sciences library open to all staff of Tallaght University Hospital and the staff of the Psychiatric Unit and Children’s Health Ireland who are located on site, as well as Trinity College staff and students based in the Hospital.   The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Librarian will be multiple and varied in keeping with the broad remit of the Library,

Overview of role:
Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, select and acquire information resources – electronic and print
  • Catalogue and classify books, reports, journals et cetera using RDA, DDC23 and MeSH on the Heritage/Cirqa Library Management System
  • Manage invoicing and purchasing of e-resources and print books on the SAP purchasing system
  • Liaise with hospital departments, TCD academic departments and suppliers as appropriate
  • Negotiate with subscription agents
  • Troubleshoot technical problems with Library systems
  • Staff the issue desk on a rotation schedule
  • Assist library users with queries in a range of areas
  • Assist with health science database searching
  • Fulfill Inter-Library loan requests
  •     Provide monthly usage statistics for departmental reports
  •      Manage e-resources, acquisitions and Library Management Systems
  •     Other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Service

Qualifications & Experience required
Must have:
Hold a professional/academic qualification in Library and Information Studies i.e. an Honours Primary Degree and a Masters or other Postgraduate Qualification in Library and Information Studies or an equivalent qualification in Librarianship, as recognised by the Library Association of Ireland
and
Minimun of 2 years experience, post qualification, in a health sciences library, academic library, professional workplace library, or similar

and

Essential criteria:

  • Knowledge of cataloguing and classification standards: RDA, MARC and DDC23
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrable aptitude and perseverance in resolving complex technical issues
  • Experience of working with Library Management Systems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically
  • Ability to work well, both independently and in a collegial team environment
  • Flexibility and a willingness to quickly learn and adapt to the changing demands of a dynamic medical library environment.
  • Ability to prioritise and deal effectively with a number of tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to meet targets and deadlines and perform work with accuracy under pressure
  • Highly articulate with an excellent ability to communicate in both written and spoken English
  • Excellent IT skills, including good working knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • An innovative approach to continuous improvement of library service

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of health sciences information resources
  • Understanding of copyright, licensing agreements and data protection (GDPR)
  • Expert skills in searching health sciences or similar bibliographic databases
  • Experience of managing e-resources, acquisitions and Library Management Systems
  • Experience of managing people

Reward & Recognition

  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, grade code 0574.
  • The appointment is fulltime, permanent and pensionable.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
  • Normal working hours are 37 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
