School Librarian

The Teresian School is a fee-paying all girls Junior & Secondary School, in Donnybrook, Dublin 4. The campus also includes a Pre-School for boys & girls from two years of age. There is a total student population of 430 and teaching and administrative staff of 50. The school is committed to the ethos of The Teresian Association and endeavours to excel in all areas of school life. A school librarian is sought to initiate and roll out the development of a catalogued Junior and Secondary Library, including an IT Hub. The school librarian will report to both the Principal of the Junior School and the Principal of the Secondary School.

  1. Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, proactive and flexible, providing effective management and leadership of the library services. The appointee will have a strong commitment to providing a quality library service and will be expected to contribute actively and positively to the further development of the Library. The School Librarian will be familiar with the ethos and aims of The Teresian School and will be well informed about the school curriculum through liaising with the teaching staff. The School Library will operate effectively as an integral part of the school, supporting whole school literacy.

In order to be considered for this position candidates must have:

  1. A degree or relevant qualification in Librarianship

  2. Knowledge and experience of Library IT systems

  3. Ability to deliver training

  4. Excellent management, organisational, communication and interpersonal skills

  5. Be capable of working on his/her own initiative and as part of a team

  6. Be capable of working to established deadlines

It is desirable that the candidates will also have:

  1. Experience working with Accelerated Reader

  2. A competence in Gaeilge (basic level)

  1. Job Description

Initially the appointee will be tasked with developing a new school library. This will include ordering furniture, flooring, books and setting up a Library IT system. It is envisioned that the set-up of the new School Library should be complete by September 2019. All books will need to be catalogued according to the Accelerated Reader system in both the Junior and Secondary School.

Once the initial library set up is complete the School Librarian will run reading and research sessions in collaboration with class and subject teachers for both schools. The School Librarian will also form part of the Literacy Team in both the Junior and Secondary Schools.

The School Librarian will be accountable for the organisation and supervision of the library, which includes, the selection, acquisition, coordination and promotion of learning resources suitable for the teaching and learning needs of staff and students at all levels of ability. The successful candidate will help create a vibrant learning environment, encouraging a high level of engagement before, during and after school to meet the needs of all students including ESL, SEN and G&T students. This involves evaluating student’s engagement and progress using the Accelerated Reader system.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Classification and cataloguing of books and other library material

  • To be aware of the full range of children’s and young people’s literature and to recommend appropriate, motivating and challenging book choices

  • To liaise with the literacy teams in both schools

  • To organise ‘Readathon’ each year and to use the event to set reading targets

  • To organise and publicise the school’s participation in World Book Day and liaise with teachers to organise a series of events and activities

  • To organise the annual ‘Book Fair’ in the School Library

  • To coordinate the PDST Wellread Initiative

  • To train staff in the Accelerated Reader programme

  • To contribute to the planning and general development of library services

  • To attend staff meetings

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the School Principals
