Senior Library Assistant – Grade V

Permanent contract – 37 hours per week

Purpose of the Role:

The Senior Library Assistant will be responsible for providing support across a range of student and staff services within the AIT Library.

The Person:

Committed to the development of library services for students and researchers. Interested in developing library information skills that reflect demands of digital environments for a range of library users. Dynamic and flexible with a willingness to learn and share skills.

Key Duties:

The appointee will carry out such duties as are assigned including but not limited to the following: –

The work of the section/ function would be reasonably complex and broad in scope. Duties could include delivering research support training sessions; information literacy workshops; circulation desk duties including issuing and discharging loans; registration of borrowers and dealing with enquiries; preparation of manuals; assisting in the development of new services.

It could also involve supporting staff in research, collection and collation of reasonably complex material and the preparation of reports and submissions. The job will involve regular contacts with students, staff, the public and organisations and individuals at all levels where discretion, tact and courtesy would have to be constantly exercised.

All jobs demand a good knowledge and skill in the use of Information and Communication Technologies and appointees will be expected to use new techniques and technologies as they arise. The Institute will provide the necessary training as appropriate.

Specific Duties – Senior Library Assistant Grade V:

  • Provide an excellent library service to all library users

  • Supporting new Faculty of Continuing, Professional, Online and Distance Learning.

  • Desk duties as determined by the desk rota that will encompass evening and weekend duties.

  • Assist library users with information queries (by telephone, e-mail or in person).

  • Assisting with information skills training.

  • Delivering research support training to students and staff with responsibility for developing this area

  • Designing and uploading of information slides to the digital signage system

  • Support and engagement with the AIT International Office in the following areas

  • Preparation and delivery of information materials for international students/ staff

  • Preparation and delivery of Information Literacy sessions for International students/staff

  • Acquisition requirements for the International office (using Agresso)

  • Supervision of library interns sent by International office and correspondence with their home institutions, in the library and other venue off campus

  • To participate in library training and continuing professional development.

  • Maintenance of LibGuides

  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Institute Librarian

Minimum Qualifications/Experience

  • At least two years library experience, preferably in an academic environment

  • Have the requisite knowledge, skills and competencies to carry out the role.

  • Be capable and competent of fulfilling the role to a high standard.

  • Have obtained at least Grade D3 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher, ordinary, applied or vocational programmes) or equivalent or have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the QQI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being of a comparable to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent or higher or have appropriate relevant experience which encompasses equivalent skills and expertise.

Salary Scale:

Remuneration will be based on the Grade V salary scale, currently €42,042 – €50,490 (7 points). New entrants to the Public Sector will commence on point 1 of the scale. Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.

Please note:

  • A panel of successful candidates may be formed for similar roles that may arise. The panel will be live for one year.

  • Following the implementation of the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 to 2016, the successful candidate must be Garda Vetted before commencing their duties.
