The Irish Traditional Music Archive wishes to recruit an enthusiastic individual interested in archiving Irish traditional music commercial sound recordings for a fixed-term, two-year contract, September 2015–August 2017

Contract duration: Full-time, fixed-term contract, September 2015 – August 2017, to substitute for officer on career break. The post will include scheduled evening and weekend work.

Job Description:

Working to the Director, the post holder will be responsible for the acquisition, cataloguing and management of the Irish Traditional Music Archive’s collection of commercial sound recordings. Commercial sound recordings range from analogue cylinder recordings to digital downloads.

Principle tasks of the post will include some or all of the following:

Sourcing and acquiring contemporary and historical commercial sound recordings by purchase or donation
In-depth audio cataloguing of existing and newly acquired recordings to international standards
Physical care of sound recordings; digital file management
Preparation of bimonthly online listing of recently published material and newly acquired materials
Research and reference support to colleagues and Archive users in ITMA’s Reading Room and by phone/email
Management of audio digitisation projects
Participation in outreach and educational events including delivering presentations
Leading or participating in special projects as assigned, including online projects
Managing budgets
Such other related tasks and special projects as may from time to time be required to fulfil the objectives of ITMA
Additional information:

Candidates should note that occasional travel may be required. Candidates should note that the position entails lifting and carrying boxes and handling dusty materials.

Personal requirements

Essential criteria:
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or industry related professional qualification
Broad knowledge of Irish traditional song, instrumental music and dance
Competence in Irish
Music literacy
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent IT skills and experience in using databases or working in a digital environment
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues
Ability to work to deadlines
Desirable criteria:
A postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies or Archives and Records Management or an industry related professional qualification
One to three years of relevant experience in libraries/archives or in Irish traditional music research
Experience and knowledge of cataloguing especially sound recordings
Fluency in Irish and knowledge of one or more European languages
Formal musical training or academic background in music or work experience in the field of music
Demonstrated organisational, problem-solving, and planning skills

Salary commensurate with experience
