About the post: 

The Teaching & Learning Support Librarian designs, develops and delivers teaching and learning services and activities in support of the taught courses and postgraduate research of RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Through liaison with academic departments and support services they ensure information skills sessions are delivered to students and supporting material and advice is in place to help students make full use of library resources and learn effective information handling skills.

 

There are two Teaching & Learning Support Librarian roles at RCSI.  One postholder will lead on liaison and delivery of services to the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy & Biomolecular Sciences, and Physiotherapy. The other postholder will lead on liaison and delivery of services to the Graduate School of Healthcare Management and the Schools of Nursing & Midwifery, Population Health and Postgraduate Studies.

 

Job Responsibilities

Curriculum support and liaison

  • Providing and developing services to deliver information skills in support of the programmes of designated RCSI departments & schools including:

– Engaging in ongoing liaison with designated schools and departments to ensure curriculum support services provided by the Library are integrated and meet student needs

– Establishing and delivering a scalable, innovative and sustainable information literacy programme

  • Creating learning and instructional materials in support of specific taught sessions and for more general self-directed use, exploiting the use of appropriate  online tools and packages to enhance delivery
  • Maintaining and developing knowledge of pedagogical practices relevant to health sciences education and health sciences librarianship
  • Evaluating programmes and services, including teaching provision and support activities
  • Evaluating and recommending resources in any format that support, complement and extend the learning support needs for all students and staff from designated schools and departments
  • Working with the Library Content & Metadata Management team to solicit, gather, and check availability of reading list items, working with departments to ensure needs can be met
  • Coordinating with the Customer Service and Communications Coordinator to promote the full range of library services available to designated schools and departments
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with designated schools

Teaching & Learning support

  • Line management and supervision of the Library Assistant with specific responsibility for Teaching & Learning Support [TLSL (Medicine, Pharmacy & Physiotherapy) role only] / Work closely with the Library Assistant with specific responsibility for Teaching & Learning Support, assigning and supervising tasks, in consultation with the other Teaching & Learning Support Librarian [TLSL (Management, Nursing & Postgraduate Studies) role only]
  • Working closely with the other Teaching & Learning Support Librarian to coordinate work for the Library Assistant (Teaching & Learning), to deliver information skills training for other library users, and to develop online support material through LibGuides and other software as appropriate.
  • Maintaining knowledge of literature search and reference management practices to be able to instruct and assist users
  • Maintaining knowledge and experience of learning technologies and practices used to support the provision of innovative, high quality library instruction and support information including use of Moodle, LibGuides, Panopto, Camtasia, Open Educational Resources and social media etc.
  • Leading the development and delivery of a range of generic skills sessions, working with the wider team, to help meet enquiry demands through the annual academic cycle

Education, Research & Clinical Support

  • Assisting with the delivery and development of a consultation service to students and staff, including comprehensive reference, literature and systematic review searching assistance in health sciences disciplines.
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the Education, Research & Clinical Support team to support the development and delivery of research support services including designing and delivering training and update skills sessions to academic staff in the manner and spaces that are most appropriate.
  • Providing expert support for, and developing training materials on, reference management packages
  • Working with the ERC team, maintaining and developing the online materials, centred on LibGuides, that provide self-help support and guidance to library users

General

  • Identifying gaps or deficiencies in library services and making proposals where appropriate to improve library services.
  • Building and maintaining strong collegial and operational working relationships within the library department at all levels
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with peers in similar institutions and roles
  • Representing the Library on Faculty/School/Departmental and other committees as appropriate with delegated authority from the Director Library Services
  • Pursuing continual updating of skills and knowledge relevant to practicing health sciences librarians & liaison services
  • Identifying and sharing best practice with library colleagues
  • Demonstrating the RCSI competencies
  • Making a positive contribution to all aspects of the library service
  • Providing usage statistics and management information as required
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
  • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time
